Let’s cook...Melomakarona à la Savouidakis!

Ingredients (makes about 30 melomakarona)
- ¾ cup SAVOU Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- ½ cup sugar
- ½ cup fresh orange juice
- Zest of 1 orange
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ½ tsp ground cloves
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tbsp cognac or brandy (optional)
- ½ cup fine semolina
- 2½ cups all-purpose flour
For the syrup
- ¾ cup honey
- ¾ cup water
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 strip orange peel
- For garnish
- ½ cup chopped walnuts
Method
- Whisk together SAVOU Extra Virgin Olive Oil and sugar. Add the orange juice, orange zest, cinnamon, cloves, and cognac.
- Dissolve the baking soda in a little orange juice and stir into the mixture.
- Add the semolina, then gently fold in the flour until a soft dough forms. Do not overwork the dough.
- Shape into small oval cookies and bake at 180°C / 350°F for 20–25 minutes, until golden brown.
- Simmer the honey, water, cinnamon stick, and orange peel for 3–4 minutes.
- Dip the cooled cookies into the warm syrup for just 2–3 seconds.
- Sprinkle generously with chopped walnuts and serve.
