Let’s cook...Melomakarona à la Savouidakis!

| Recipes

Honey, warm spices, and the smooth, balanced character of SAVOU Extra Virgin Olive Oil come together in Greece’s most beloved Christmas treat.

Ingredients (makes about 30 melomakarona)

  • ¾ cup SAVOU Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ cup fresh orange juice
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground cloves
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tbsp cognac or brandy (optional)
  • ½ cup fine semolina
  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour

For the syrup

  • ¾ cup honey
  • ¾ cup water
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 strip orange peel
  • For garnish
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts

Method

  • Whisk together SAVOU Extra Virgin Olive Oil and sugar. Add the orange juice, orange zest, cinnamon, cloves, and cognac.
  • Dissolve the baking soda in a little orange juice and stir into the mixture.
  • Add the semolina, then gently fold in the flour until a soft dough forms. Do not overwork the dough.
  • Shape into small oval cookies and bake at 180°C / 350°F for 20–25 minutes, until golden brown.
  • Simmer the honey, water, cinnamon stick, and orange peel for 3–4 minutes.
  • Dip the cooled cookies into the warm syrup for just 2–3 seconds.
  • Sprinkle generously with chopped walnuts and serve.

Wishing you sweet bakes and festive moments throughout the holiday season.
